There are a number of general questions that Weldon is asked each week by racers regarding the company and products. The following information provides answers to those most commonly asked on such topics as supported fuel types, filtration, and pump service.<\/p>\n

How much do your pumps cost?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our fuel pumps<\/a> range in price from $420 to $1500, depending on type, flow and configuration.<\/p>\n

Why should I pay a premium for a Weldon product?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Weldon pumps<\/a> are manufactured using aircraft billet aluminum, high speed steels and American made electrical motors \u2013 there are no plastics or phenolics used in a Weldon pump. Each pump also comes complete with its own flow chart and traceable serial number.<\/p>\n

Can a Weldon pump or regulator be repaired if broken?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, all Weldon High Performance pumps<\/a> and regulators can be repaired, if damaged. They can either be returned to the plant or to an authorized repair facility (Kinsler Fuel Injection<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Can a Weldon pump be used on a carbureted system?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, all Weldon pumps<\/a> can be used with a carbureted system, just choose the correct Weldon bypass regulator for your application. They are offered in two versions to fit both street use (A2040-281-A-15<\/strong><\/a>) and drag racing use (A2040-281-A-30<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n

Can a Weldon fuel pump and regulator be used for alcohol fuel?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, all Weldon pumps<\/a> and regulators are compatible with alcohol \u2013 the only exceptions are our in-line fuel pumps. The in-line fuel pump, where fuel flows through the motor, makes it incompatible with alcohol fuel.<\/p>\n

Can I use my Weldon pump to pump water?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, Weldon fuel pumps<\/a> are not designed to pump or be used to transfer water.<\/p>\n

What position can I mount my Weldon pump? Can I mount it upside down? Can I mount the pump above the top of the fuel cell?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The preferred mounting position is with the motor up and the pump end down, but it can be mounted horizontally or vertically. It is okay to mount a Weldon pump above the fuel tank \/ cell \u2013 they can lift as well as push the fuel. Although, if the pump is placed above the tank, the use of a one way check valve on the outlet of the pump to prevent the back flow of fuel into the tank, is recommended. Avoid mounting a Weldon pump at a 45 degree angle \u2013 this will cause an added load on the motor and pump bearings.<\/p>\n

Will the 9200-A pump \u201clift\u201d ATF or motor oil?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a09200-A<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will not lift fluids efficiently \u2013 it will work best when the inlet is placed at or slightly below the fluid level and when the fluid is warm.<\/p>\n

Should I use a relay or a fuse when running a Weldon electric fuel pump? If so, what size relay or fuse I use? What size wire should I use?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, a high quality relay and a fuse should be used \u2013 they should be sized to match the maximum allowable amperage of the given pump. This information can be found on the pump\u2019s supplied flow chart. The wire size used should be no smaller than what is supplied with the motor and the wire length should be kept to a minimum.<\/p>\n

Should I filter my fuel before it enters the pump? Should I use a filter after the pump? What size filters should I use?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, Weldon pump recommends the use of a 40 \u2013 100 micron filter before the pump and a 10 micron filter after the pump. Either a paper type element or a stainless steel mesh type element will work for filtering fuel. Although, when using ethanol or methanol based fuels, a stainless element should be used.<\/p>\n

Does my fuel tank need to be vented?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, the fuel tank or cell requires venting to the outside of the vehicle. Do not use a vented gas cap in lieu of a true tank or cell vent. Make sure to prevent any contamination from entering the vent line when vehicle is in operation.<\/p>\n

How do I use my Weldon fuel system with a supercharger or a turbocharger?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The actual installation for a turbo or supercharged application does not change the usage of a Weldon fuel pump. All Weldon Bypass Regulators have a boost reference port that needs to be plumbed in accordance with the turbo or supercharger manufacturers\u2019 instructions.<\/p>\n

How do I hook-up my \u201cwet nitrous system\u201d to my Weldon fuel system?<\/strong><\/p>\n

All Weldon fuel pumps<\/a> are compatible with all nitrous systems. Fuel pumps and regulators must be used per the nitrous manufacturers\u2019 recommended installation instructions.<\/p>\n

Can I use my Weldon fuel pump \u201con the street,\u201d\u00a0in traffic?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Most Weldon fuel pumps can be used in street driven vehicles when used with the 14000 Controller. Please note, however, that neither the\u00a0A600-A<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0nor the\u00a01100-A<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0require the use of the 14000 Controller in street-driven applications.\u00a0The\u00a014000 Controller<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is a Pulse Width Modulation device that controls fuel pump speed, but does not allow fuel pressure to drop. This allows the pump speed (fuel flow) to be lowered (via a potentiometer) while maintaining pressure in the system.<\/p>\n

Can I run my Weldon fuel pump \u201cdry\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, but damage to the pump element will occur if the \u201cdry-run\u201d condition continues.<\/p>\n

What is the 14000 Controller? Does it lower the voltage of the pump?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a014000 Controller<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is a PWM electrical device that can control the speed of a Weldon fuel pump to achieve lower flow (gph), but allows fuel pressure to remain constant. It also allows the user to \u201ctoggle\u201d between this lower pump speed and full pump speed as increased vehicle performance is required. The 14000 Controller actually \u201cspreads\u201d out the current that the motor receives, this is what \u201cslows\u201d pump speed.<\/p>\n

Can I operate my Weldon pump with a 16 volt system?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, all Weldon fuel pumps can run on 16 volts.<\/p>\n

How do I store my Weldon pump for the winter?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ideal way to store your Weldon pump during the off season is to remove it from the vehicle, spray a rust preventative lubricant (good tool oil or Marvel Mystery Oil) into the inlet, install the \u201cred\u201d shipping caps and place the pump in a dry location. However, most times this is not practical. So, it is best to remove inlet hose (watch for leftover fuel in the line and pump), place a small amount of oil, or rust preventative into the inlet port and \u201ccycle\u201d the pump for a second or two, and then reconnect the inlet line. The oil coating will protect the high speed steel internal pieces from damage.<\/p>\n

I use methanol fuel. Do I need to \u201cflush\u201d my Weldon pump after use?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is recommended to \u201cflush\u201d your fuel system with racing gasoline after using methanol, although not specifically required with a Weldon pump due to its use of leaded bronze and tool steel as internal parts. The \u201cflushing\u201d will mainly protect all the components of the fuel system that are directly affected by methanol. Methanol and alcohol based racing fuels are highly corrosive and also carry a certain amount of moisture \u2013 this moisture is what needs to be eliminated from the fuel pump and system. The use of a good top lube for the fuel is also recommended.<\/p>\n<\/div>
